Vegetation Effects on the of Soils Microwave Emission

چکیده
Research has shown that soil moisture information can be retrieved by passive microwave remote sensing. This is even possible when there is a vegetation canopy present if the effects of the vegetation are corrected for. Vegetation correction algorithms must attempt to include all significant physical parameters, yet they must also only require data that can be readily obtained. Previous research proposed a model that attempted to meet these requirements. Critical to this model is the estimation of a vegetation parameter b that characterizes the canopy. In this study we evaluated published data to determine the functional dependence o f this parameter on vegetation characteristics.

The sensitivity of microwave emission to biomass and biophysical properties of crops and forests has been proved in several experimental and theoretical studies. Experimental investigations on microwave emission from crops carried out since early 1980s by using ground based and airborne sensors demonstrated that useful information on vegetation covered soils can be obtained by combining brightn...

Passive microwave remote sensing techniques can be used to monitor freeze/thaw at frozen soil surface. Researches found that the negative spectral gradient at 19GHz and 37GHz was a good criteria for decision of frozen soil[1]. At vegetated area, to make the algorithm simple, vegetation scattering were ignored, only their attenuation were considered, which were kept constant, regardless of veget...

Surface soil moisture is a key variable needed to understand and predict the climate. L-band microwave radiometry seems to be the best technique to remotely measure the soil moisture content, since the influence of other effects such as surface roughness and vegetation is comparatively small. This work describes a numerical model developed to efficiently compute the four elements of the Stokes ...

The atmospheric deposition of As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, V, and Zn in Albania was investigated by using the carpet-forming moss species (Hypnum cupressiforme) as bioindicators. This research is a part of the international program (International Cooperative Programme (ICP) Vegetation, UNECE) that had carried out in the most of European countries since 1987, by investigating the impacts of air pollu...
متن کاملUsing vegetation indices for soil-moisture retrievals from passive microwave radiometry
Surface soil moisture and the nature of the overlying vegetation both influence microwave emission from land surfaces significantly. One widely discussed but underused method for allowing for the effect of vegetation on soil-moisture retrievals from microwave observations is to use remotely sensed vegetation indices. This paper explores the potential for using the Normalised Difference Vegetati...
